Cell division= cell reproduction and is a integral part of the cell cycle.
General
The main function of cell division is duplicating the genome( genetic information). When the cell begins to divide the chromosomes duplicate and go to opposite ends of the cell. Then they enter two new nuclei and seperate into daughter cells.
Chromosomes
Before cell division the chromosomes are still linear yet after they are condensed. On chromosome is made up of one long linear chromatin fiber. When the cell seperates the chromatin fiber becomes coiled and folded which causes the chromosomes to be shorter.
During duplication the narrow waist where the sister chromatids meet is called the centromere which later seperates into two seperate chromosomes and go into two new nuclie.
Mitosis
This is the seperation of the nucleus which takes only 1 hour of the cell cycle ( the time a cell is first formed by the dividing of parent cell until its own divison to two cells.) The interphase takes up 90% of the cycle. It consist of G1, where the cell grows, S, where the duplication of the chromosomes occur and the cell is still growing, and G2, where the cell continious to grow and prepares itself. At the end there is Mitosis where the chromosomes separate and the nucleus. After this cytokenisis follows it up. Mitosis has 5 stages which are illustrated in the video.
